Eight flee Auckland house fire  from Stuff.co.nz

Eight West Auckland residents narrowly escaped a fire which has destroyed their home this morning.

The Fire Service were called to the blaze in Glen Eden at 5.20am and called for back up when they realised there were people in the house.

Fire communication spokeswoman Megan Ruru said 16 appliances from all over the Waitemata region responded to the call and it took two hours to extinguish the blaze on West Coast Rd.

Police said the residents of the two-storey house escaped serious injury but several were being treated for smoke inhalation.

One firefighter was taken to hospital for treatment on a wound to his hand.

Ruru said it was too early to know the cause of the fire but investigators would begin work once it had been doused.
