The re-make of the classic 1949 film, based on the true story.
The film is about the SS Politician, an 8000-ton cargo ship sailing for Kingston, Jamaica and New Orleans with a cargo including 264,000 bottles of malt whisky. On 5 February 1941, during gale force winds, she ran aground off the Island of Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides.
Its setting on the imaginary isle of Todday off the west coast of Scotland lends itself to gorgeous colour photography and the gentle, subversive wit of the 1949 version has been left intact. The original Film Whisky Galore, was shot in Barra during a wet summer in 1948 and released in June 1949. Based on the book by Compton McKenzie it was an instant success. But why remake the film?
Firstly more evidence is available on the true story of the “S.S. Politician”, the cinematic talents of a new generation of British actors and the fact that it seems folly to have made the film in monochrome when the unmatchable colours of land and sea in the area were available. A world class director Gilles Mackinnon records this true “magic”.
The perennial story of a united community putting itself against officialdom and authority has resonances the world over. It is the purpose of this film to tap into that international sharing and genuinely entertain a world audience with a popular tale that is universal.
User Review. Good fun 25 April 2017 | by Robert E Cooper (Scotland) – “Sit back and relax, don’t bother trying to compare to the first film, whether it is better or worse, I didn’t care. I sat in full theatre and the whole audience including me thoroughly enjoyed this film. We laughed at the funny bits, and enjoyed the story, what more do you need. Just go see it and have fun”
