With the possibility of heavy rain on Sunday and Monday it is a timely reminder to check our properties and surrounds.
Take a little time this weekend to inspect your properties’ drainage systems, including gutters, downpipes, grates, and drains. If left unchecked, obstructions in these systems due to debris accumulation might result in inefficient drainage, increasing the risk of localised and wider flooding and water-related damage.
Things to check and fix:
1. Gutters and Downpipes: Make sure these are clear of leaves and any other debris to safeguard against overflow.
2. Surfaces Grates & Drains: Scrutinise these for any signs of blockage. If free of obstruction, water should flow through freely.
3. Check your property for items stored in floodplains – and move anything that could be swept away and cause damage downstream in a flood.
4. Spot Checks After Rain: Following any rain, check if water is pooling anywhere. This could be an early sign of drainage issues.
It is much more cost-effective to resolve minor drainage issues now than to deal with extensive water damage repairs later.
Just remember that any works within the road reserve are the responsibility of Auckland Council/Auckland Transport.
Of course, make sure that any inspections or repairs are completed in a safe manner. If in doubt, do not attempt the works yourself and contact a professional or Auckland Council.
